Dr. Gelernter is a licensed psychologist and the director of our multi-disciplinary clinic. He has practiced in East Cobb since 1987, and since 1993, he has directed our team of multi-disciplinary clinicians who provide a full spectrum of services.
Dr. Gelernter is well known for working with troubled teens and their families. Marital and Family Therapies are an integral part of his practice and he works with adults to address short-term life problems or long-term relationship/behavioral issues. Areas of expertise include counselling regarding substance abuse, depression, anxiety, sexuality, and relationships.
Dr. Gelernter believes in addressing concerns through a positive psychology approach that includes looking at a person’s family system from a whole-life perspective. With a non-judgmental style, he uses behavioral and cognitive-behavioral techniques to help his patients learn to better manage their future.
As a clinical psychologist, Dr. Gelernter often is asked to provide second-opinion consults for parents who want to better understand their child’s Psychological Evaluation. He also provides parenting advice and helps develop treatment plans for oppositional children.
Dr. Gelernter has directed numerous inpatient and outpatient programs, including day-treatment programs for severely disturbed children, an emergency response clinic for a mental health facility, a substance abuse awareness and prevention project, and an inpatient day-treatment program for children and adolescents. In addition, he has directed a 200-bed mental health unit at a federal penitentiary and worked in substance abuse programs at two Veterans Administration hospitals.
Dr. Gelernter has served on the boards of directors for more than a dozen non-profit organizations, including four schools, a number of leadership training organizations, and numerous non-profit organizations. He also has served on the Board of Directors and Executive Board of the Cobb County Chamber of Commerce, fulfilled a term as Vice Chairman of the Board of Ethics for the Cobb County Board of Commissioners, and helped design and initiate funding for the Cobb County School System's Crisis Prevention and Intervention program.
Dr. Gelernter received a Bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Georgia in 1980, and a Doctorate degree in Clinical Psychology from Florida State University in 1986. He completed clinical psychology Internships with the United States Department of Justice Federal Bureau of Prisons (1986) and the Medical College of Georgia in (1987).
